National Diabetes Awareness Month

(NaBloPoMo Day 1)

As of October 29th, November 2010 has been officially been proclaimed as National Diabetes Month! Thank you President Barack Obama for helping us spread the word about T1 Diabetes!

While this news thrills me, I would like to correct ONE statement in the press release that gave incorrect information.

"Type 1 diabetes, which can occur at any age but is most often diagnosed in young people, is managed by a lifetime of regular medication or insulin treatment."

Since I am participating in NaBloPoMo for the month of November, and November is now officially National Diabetes Month, I have decided to post a Diabetes fact each day for the month of November.

I am hoping to raise awareness of the disease that our family struggles with day in and day out.

So, here is the fact for today...

Diabetes Fact #1: T1 Diabetes CANNOT be treated with medication. The only way to manage T1 Diabetes is with insulin. Without insulin, T1 Diabetics would die. Period.

It is so hard on kids with Diabetes when people are so misinformed! My daughter is 15 years old and still gets very angry when people try to tell her maybe she should eat better and get more excersize! I do everything within my power to kindly and calmly say, "I am sorry, but you are referring to Type 2 Diabetes. No matter how my daughter eats or what kind of activity level she has her Pancreas will never make Insulin". Take a deep breath and try not to roll my eyes.
My daughter's 3rd grade teacher actually reported me to CPS for allowing my daughter to eat sugar from time to time! Of course all I had to do was allow CPS to talk with our Endo and it was done, but I was a single mother at the time and aldready had enough stress in our lives. I thank you and look forward to your Diabetes facts all month long. Here's to more education, better management, and a cure!!!
