How was YOUR Sunday?

Mine consisted of the following events...

1) 5am-6am The Princess was in my bed, COUGHING. Finally got up at 6 and gave her a breathing treatment.

2) Took my shower.

3) Get Rod off to work. (2nd job on the weekends)

4) Make cranky kids breakfast. They refuse to eat. Both kids don't feel well. The Superhero has a small fever. Give The Superhero TYLENOL without thinking.

5) Call my parents to let them know I will be dropping the kids off early so I can run to the store for cough meds for The Princess. My dad asks me what medicine it is that The Superhero CANNOT have because of his Dexie, OH CRAP! TYLENOL! What was I thinking!?! We have had Dexcom for 9 months and in that time I have NEVER needed to give The Superhero meds for fever, so without thinking I chose to give him tylenol. Oops!

6) Get kids ready to go spend the day with NaNa. Get myself ready for a marketing event at the baseball game. Pack everything we need, including all D-Supplies and The Princess' breathing machine/meds.

7) Get kids in car. Begin drive to my parents house and realize I forgot the ONLY thing The Superhero asked me to bring with us, Toy Story movies to watch on NaNa's couch.

8) The Superhero begins his Not-Feeling-So-Great-MELTDOWN. I tell him I will drop them off and run back home to get his movie when I get The Princess her medicine for the cough.

9) Drop kids off. Run back home and grab both Toy Story 1 and Toy Story 2. Run to the store and grab cough meds, more ibuprofen, and some yummy looking powdered donuts.

10) My co-worker meets me at my mom's (thank goodness for Starbucks, and Thanks Kimberly!).

11) Change The Superhero's Dexie site since it is not working and needed to be changed out today anyway. Instructed my mom to start the sensor in about 2 hours when the Tylenol would be out of his system. Then to check his BG 2x 2 hours later. (still kicking myself for giving him TYLENOL)

12) Head to the baseball game for work. Talk to a few interested families. Got to meet one of MY students and another one I enrolled a few months back.

13) Go back to pick up the kids. The Princess was still sleeping, The Superhero was just waking up. He did NOT look good. I went and sat by him and could feel the heat radiating off of him. I asked my mom for a thermometer, which she could not find. So I ran to the store to get one for their house. (and I picked up some GREEN gum, since that is how I convinced The Superhero to let me leave)

14) Get back. The Princess is now also awake and bright, pink cheeks. Not good. Check The Superhero first, 102.1 fever. The Princess next, 101.0 fever.

15) Go in the kitchen to get the meds. Measure 1 tsp for The Princess, she takes it like a champ. Go to give The Superhero his dose, 1 1/2 tsps. He GAGS himself and throws up ALL OVER. He is not a fan of medicine and said it was yucky. I then remembered I bought NEW Ibuporfen this morning at the store and I then PRAYED it was a different flavor. Thank goodness, it WAS. Bubblegum! Smelled just like the yummy antibiotics he liked a few weeks ago. My mom and I convince him to try them, and after some convincing, he did, and he liked it much better. No gagging this time!

16) After a few more minutes and lots of moaning and "I don't feel good" looks from both kids, we decided to take them to Urgent Care. My mom and I packed up the kids and headed out.

17) Urgent care. 2 hours after throat swabs for both, urinalysis completed with catheter for The Princess, ex-rays for The Princess, and a good once over from the doctor and we were on our way. They are fine. Other than a virus/cold. And a side note, the doctor there tonight has volunteered at the local Diabetes camp (7 years ago) and she was telling me how hard it was doing the night checks on the kids and then having to do it all over again the next day/night. She said she has more respect for Diabetes parents than ever before. And that you cannot fully understand unless you live it...I might love her. :-)

18) Pizza at my mom's house for dinner. Praying that works out for The Superhero's BG. I attempted another combo bolus.

19) Head home. Drug up my kids with meds (Ibuprofen for both, and the following for The Princess...prevacid (acid reflux), orapred (steroid for croup), and Triaminic (for the cough) )

20) Give The Princess her breathing treatment. She is almost asleep from the busy day. Rock her for a few minutes. She is a little restless and coughing a ton. But falls asleep anyway.

21) I am sure The Princess will be up again soon and climbing in my bed.

ONE LONG DAY and I am HEADING TO BED early!

Night all!

Glad TODAY is OVER!

Or, almost over anyway.

Here is a run down of MY day...

3:30am (yep, that early) The Princess crawls into bed with Rod and I. This is becoming a habit since she is teething, AGAIN.

5:30am The Princess is READY to get up and she is NOT happy.

6:00am I make Rod get up with The Princess while I take a shower. I check The Superhero's Dexie first, 186, Ahhh, Finally! A number in the 100's!

6:30am I join The Princess in the livingroom while Rod takes his turn getting ready for the day. I check email/FB/blog/etc.

6:50am I decide it is time to go check The Superhero and get him up. We decide what to eat for breakfast (bagels, because I bought the cinnamon ones he likes, or at least used to, keep reading...) ---Bolus The Superhero for part of said bagel.

7:05am The kids sit at the table to eat. The Superhero FREAKS out because he DOES NOT like THAT kind of bagel and wants Daddy's PLAIN bagel instead. This is the SAME plain bagel he refused to eat just last week. Alright, switch bagels with Daddy.

7:30am Rod leaves for work and I get the kids ready for school. The Superhero has pre-school today and The Princess has Daycare (more about that in another post).

7:55am The Superhero, The Princess and I leave for school. Backpacks, lunch boxes, purse, Diabetes supplies, etc. in hand.

7:57am The Superhero complains of his pump site hurting. I asked if we should stop at NaNa's and change it before school or after school, he said we should change it on Sunday. Hmmm..Ok, I guess we will stop on the way. Quick call to Pompa to ask him to get the supplies ready for us. (because this tired, exhausted mommy does not carry pump supplies with her since we started school and cleaned out our bag).

8:00am Quick stop at NaNa and Pompa's for a site change. The Superhero got his gum treat and we we one our way to school in a few short minutes. Pump battery has 2 bars, as it has for a few days. It was on my agenda to change it at the next change, which I was not planning on doing until later today. I don't want Awesome Nurse S. to be without IOB info, and that means waiting to change the battery.

8:15am Arrive at pre-school to drop off The Superhero. Check Dexie, 326 arrows UP, YIKES! Check IOB, lots of insulin, leave it. Let Teacher #1 know he is high, but should come down soon. If he continues to rise, Call Awesome Nurse S. Let both teachers know that The Superhero's NaNA will be picking him up today.

8:30am Arrive at the Daycare and drop off The Princess. Discuss with teachers about her crankiness and teething. I also reminded them of the impending Binkie Intervention (post to come tomorrow).

8:45am Arrive back home to get some work done. Conference calls scheduled for 9am, 9:30am, 10am, and a math class at 11am.

9:00am Complete 504 meeting for a family in my class.

9:20am Cell phone rings. Uh oh! Awesome Nurse S. calling to let me know that The Superhero is 367 and the remote recommends giving 0.6 units, I asked her to give him 0.4 units since he will be running around like a crazy child at recess soon. (0.4 is still quite a bit for The Superhero). She then tells me that the meter says "low battery". Ugh! I knew I should have just changed out the battery this morning! Does this mean the meter battery or the pump battery?

9:25am Rush to send messages to my 9:30am and 10am conference calls to re-schedule for the afternoon. Grab some batteries and head to the school.

9:45am Arrive at school. Change batteries in both the meter and in the pump. Confirm the pump asking what type of battery. Lock buttons on pump. Let The Superhero run off to recess.

10:00am Since I re-scheduled my calls and have nothing now until 11am, I decided to make a "quick" trip to Target. I needed to pick up The Superhero's insulin and a few other things. (including extra batteries to keep at SCHOOL)

10:30am Arrive back home in time to log in to my math class. Throw in some laundry really quick. Check in with Awesome Nurse S. The Superhero was down to 170's after recess. AND then THE PROBLEM. This tired, exhausted brain of mine FORGOT that changing the battery in the pump has more STEPS to the process! Awesome Nurse S. could not bolus The Superhero. I walked her through the rest of the battery change necessities, rewind, load cartridge, and prime the pump. Re-hook The "Bionic" Superhero back up to his pump. And off he goes!

11:00am Math class. Man THIS hour flew by today!

12:00pm Check in with NaNa to make sure The Superhero is doing ok. BG came down ok. He ate lunch. She bolused. Then she fought LOWS all afternoon. CRAZY day!

12:30pm Conference Calls begin. Oh wait, did I forget to eat lunch? Quick, make a bagel and cram it down before the next call!

1:30pm Calls done. Tie up loose ends with email, etc for work.

2:00pm Leave to pick up The Princess. She is happy as can be at daycare. The go to get The Superhero from NaNa's.

2:30pm Stop for a quick car wash. (the kids thought this was TOO cool)

3:00pm Home! Just in time to get MORE work done while listening to CRANKY, WHINY kids.

5:30pm Make a quick "dinner" for the kids. Keep working in the meantime.

6:00pm Clean the kitchen, has not been cleaned in DAYS.

6:30pm Get the CRANKY Princess ready for bed. Fight her for over an hour to fall asleep.

7:45pm Check in with FB and email for a little ME time.

I don't know about you, but I am exhausted! What a day!

And on a funny note, I asked Awesome Nurse S. how The Superhero did at his pre-recess check (when he was really high) and she said he was a little ornery. He kept asking her "Are you DONE with ME yet???" A little sassiness in his voice. LOL!

Here's hoping tomorrow is a LITTLE less BUSY!

One Crazy Day

Today was my first day back at work from “vacation”. Of course, I knew it would take some time to get back into the routine with the kids. We went about our morning as usual. Had breakfast, got the kids dressed, checked email, nursed The Princess and put her down for her nap.

After her nap I gave her the medicine for reflux as I normally would, though I was doing everything with one hand since she would not let me put her down. I had not put the cap back on the medicine bottle yet; I figured I would get to it in a minute. After I gave her the medicine, I had to clean her nose and then change her clothes from her spitting up on her outfit.

While I was gone to change her, I told The Superhero to be a “good boy” as I always do. He said “good boy, promise”. So off I went to change The Princess. I come back out of her room and notice him standing at the kitchen counter with her medicine bottle on its side! (of course, I am thinking “why in the world did I not put the cap back on that bottle)

I tell him not to touch it again and I was walking around the counter to get to him and the medicine and he looked right at me as I was telling him “NO!” and he proceeded to dump the ENTIRE bottle of medicine on the floor (that I just cleaned yesterday!).

So I put him in time-out while I clean everything up, then clean his hands and mine from the sticky mess. I call the pharmacy to have the prescription refilled. It was an almost full bottle and will cost me $35 to replace. We move on with our day…

Feed the kids lunch, put them down for naps, eat my lunch, get some work done.

The Superhero got up from his nap, blood sugar was PERFECT! (yeah the basal changes seem to be working) He has a snack. We wait for The Princess to get up from her nap. Both kids napped 3 ½ hours today, AWESOME! I feed The Princess and we get ready to head out. I had to meet a co-worker to pick up marketing materials before tomorrow’s movie event.

We get loaded in the car and head out. We are on the 101 freeway when I hear the lovely “music” from The Superhero’s pump letting me know the battery was low. I think “Thanks God I put a battery in his bag the other day when I saw 2 bars left on the pump battery” and then start thinking why did I not change this when I did his site change before I left, I knew we were getting close to needing a new battery, but did not know it would be today, I thought we could get away until the next change on Thursday.

We get to our meeting place, I get out and change the battery. Get back in the car to wait until my co-worker arrived. I hear the “music” from the pump, again. What?!? I look at the remote, “pump not primed, no delivery”. Oh, you have got to be kidding me! How could I forget to rewind, load and prime the pump? I cannot believe I forgot to do this. I get out and rewind, load, and prime the pump. Co-worker arrives, get materials, get back in the car and head home.

On the 101 going home, the gas light comes on! You have got to be kidding me! I decided to wait until I get off the freeway to get gas, luckily we made it fine. We stop for gas and head home.

I REALLY hope the rest of our evening is a little less uneventful than the day has been.
