Oh Bananas!

As a kid I remember eating bananas ALL the time. My favorite was cut up banana in a bowl with milk and a little bit of sugar. YUMMY!

So why is it that as an adult, I have developed an allergy to them? I can't remember the last time I ate one without a reaction. I don't know exactly when this started, but when I eat them (which has been a LONG time) I start to get a very itchy mouth. Then it progressed to being an itchy face and mouth.

And now it is even worse! When I was in WA visiting my brother and his wife I had put The Princess' food on my plate before cutting it up and putting it on her plate. She was eating banana with her fruit. My food touched the same spot on the plate as her banana and I got all itchy! Just from that little cross contamination. Crazy!

THEN, last night, I cut a banana for The Princess and put it on her plate. Without thinking I rubbed my eye at some point during dinner. I started rubbing it more and more because it was getting ITCHY.

Then it it me (well, actually, The Daddy pointed it out), I TOUCHED the banana and then TOUCHED my eye! That was it! I washed my hands and my eye, and all was fine again!

I wonder why this allergy came on as an adult and is now worse than ever. It just boggles my mind!
